Joutomiehiä

Joutomiehiä is a performance in which the dancers of Tsuumi collaborate with Katriina Honkanen and the Tulilintu ensemble. The performance includes strong rhythms as well as emotional ballads performed by four dancers and six musicians.

The name “Joutomiehiä” is a reference to Finnish vagrants from the early 19th century. The story is brought to life by a narrator who transports the viewers to the times and lives of the vagrants. The music is from Katriina Honkanen and the Tulilintu ensemble’s album and the show also has songs from Honkanen’s first long play “Rosvot”.

TSIP

TSUUMI IMPROVISATION PROJECT TSIP

TSIP is Tsuumi Dance Theatre’s new improvisation project. The talents and reformers of new Finnish folk dance and music throw themselves with all their heart and soul into the thralls of both movement and music. TSIP takes dance and music to the people, into mundance situations where art can surprise and sublime. TSIP will stop at nothing to take hold of its space and audience.

TSIP lives in the moment, shows us our everyday lives in a new light and thus reminds us of the preciousness and unpredictability of life. The events of any given performance are dictated by time. TSIP sets sail against the headwinds created by the past and present. The goal is both simple and impossible; to carry everything along and just be now.

Kehotus

Tsuumi Dance Theatre  has had a new perspective towards folk dance for 15 years and the group has created successful artpieces with several different choreographers and directors. Now these modern day folk dance explorers collaborate and challenge themselves with the contemporary dance choreography pioneer Ervi Sirén. Kehotus is a performance that highlights mans timeless placement in the flow of culture history and also in motion rituals.

From Tsuumi’s point of view traditional folk dance does not live in the past, but in us. Sirén, on the other hand, has given emphasis to human body and it’s versatility. These two perspectives have created Kehotus, a work of art that once again renews Tsuumi and its repertoire. Sirén’s goal in all this is to express her respect towards folk dance and to bring out the skill that made Tsuumi what it is today. Despite Kehotus being a contemporary dance it also contains the essence of folk dance.

Heads You’ll go, Tails I’ll stay

Dance theatre piece for a woman, a man, a musician and a living room.

This is the starting point: there’s a couple, lots of music, a living room and the tensions between them all – especially between the couple. This piece of dance theatre focuses on the inner movements familiar to us all: loneliness, dreams and fears, realising your own boundaries and giving them up. Perhaps it’s all about love – the different actions and emotions surrounding it.

Several Finnish poems are essential to this piece. The poems are lyrics for songs, dialogue between the performers and an integral element in it’s own right.
